Dr Wei Yang joined New Towns Taskforce

17 Sept 2024

Dr Wei Yang has been appointed to the New Towns Taskforce, joining a select group of eight seasoned experts tasked with delivering new towns that could provide hundreds of thousands of new homes.

Dr Yang will work alongside Chair Sir Michael Lyons and Deputy Chair Dame Kate Barker, as well as other leading figures from the fields of planning, infrastructure, housing, finance, architecture, and urban regeneration.

The Taskforce held its inaugural meeting in Milton Keynes on 17th September, marking the first step toward advancing a vision for new towns. These large-scale communities are expected to contribute to the delivery of high-quality homes on a significant scale.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner underscored the importance of this milestone in the government’s plans for the next generation of new towns. “With a strong team of experts by his side, I have every confidence in Sir Michael’s leadership. His Taskforce is moving quickly to ensure our long-term ambitions become a reality,” said Rayner.

The Taskforce is now focused on identifying potential sites for new towns, establishing guiding principles and standards, exploring innovative ways to attract funding and investment, and seeking practical solutions for delivery.

The group will report back with its findings in 12 months.
